Pole & Line Caught Albacore, Yellowfin, & Skipjack Tuna Mercury Levels are well below U.S. and International safety standards

American Tuna, creators of Pole & Line, harvests albacore tuna averaging 3-5 years of age near the surface of the ocean using the sustainable and time-tested “Pole & Line” method. Younger tuna are naturally low in mercury.

From an overall nutritional standpoint, tuna is more diverse in its nutrient content than many people would suspect. It is an excellent source of vitamin B3 (niacin), and a very good source of other B vitamins including B1 (thiamin) and B6 (pyridoxine). Tuna is also a good source of the minerals phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium. Because of its muscle content, tuna is an excellent source of protein, providing two thirds of the Daily Value (DV) in one 4-ounce serving. Tuna is also a valuable source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, as well as the antioxidant mineral selenium.

The FDA’s has established a safe mercury level in tuna at or below 1.0 (one) part per million (ppm). The international standard is even more rigorous at 0.5 (one-half) ppm.

American Tuna’s albacore is tested by an independent lab and found to contain 0.231 ppm of mercury. This is less than one fourth of the 1.0 ppm level determined safe by the U.S. government.

American Tuna’s skipjack is also tested by an independent lab and found to contain 0.173 ppm of mercury. This is less than one fifth of the 1.0 ppm level determined safe by the U.S. government.

The American Albacore Fishing Association (AAFA) tests albacore catches annually and found an average mercury content of 0.236 parts per million in AAFA albacore tuna, less than one fourth of the 1.0 ppm level determined safe by the U.S. government. The American Tuna and Pole & Line brands both source all of their albacore tuna from AAFA fisheries.

All the independent lab tests referenced above indicate that Pole & Line Albacore and Pole & Line Skipjack tuna deliver great nutrition with low levels of mercury.
